B-mode ultrasonographic evaluation of normal thyroid gland in Turkmen horses: morphometric assessment and echographic characteristics

Abstract The thyroid gland is an integral part of the complex anatomy of the equine neck. Transcutaneous ultrasonography provides a non-invasive method for assessing the thyroid glands parenchyma and dimensions in horses. This study evaluated 30 clinically healthy Turkmen horses whose health status was confirmed through comprehensive physical examination, complete blood count, serum biochemical analysis, and thyroid hormone analysis. The horses were divided into two age groups: Group 1 under 36 months (three males and eight females), and Group 2: Thirty-six months and older (eight males and eleven females). Ultrasonographic assessment of the thyroid region was performed using a high-frequency linear transducer. Each thyroid lobe was systematically evaluated for its dimensions, volume, morphology, contour, parenchymal echogenicity and echotexture. Statistical analysis revealed no significant age-related differences in thyroid parameters; however, sex-based differences were observed: females had significantly greater thyroid lobe length and volume on both the left and right sides compared to males. Qualitative B-mode ultrasonography showed consistent morphological features; in the longitudinal view, all thyroid lobes exhibited a flattened, oval shape. On transverse images, most lobes (83.93%, n = 47) appeared elliptical, while the remaining lobes (16.07%, n = 9) were spherical. Irrespective of shape, all thyroid lobes demonstrated regular contour margins. Regarding echogenicity, most lobes were hyperechoic, with a few being isoechoic, relative to the sternocephalic muscle. Furthermore, all thyroid lobes exhibited homogeneous to mildly heterogeneous echotexture. This study establishes diagnostic baselines for thyroid evaluation in the Turkmen horse breed aiding in the detection and management of thyroid pathologies.

Abstract Ocular ultrasonography is a safe, painless and non-invasive diagnostic tool that provides veterinarians with detailed images of the eye and surrounding structures. This study evaluated 30 clinically healthy Turkmen horses, divided into two groups as Group 1: under 36 months (3 males, 8 females), and Group 2: 36 months and older (8 males, 11 females). Significant differences in several ocular parameters were identified across different age groups in Turkmen horses. Specifically, the mean intercanthal distance, globe diameter, ciliary body volume and area, iris thickness, corpora nigra distance, volume and area, vitreous chamber and retinal/choroidal/scleral composite size demonstrated statistically significant variations between age categories. No significant differences were detected between sexes within any of the age groups for above measured parameters. Of the ocular parameters evaluated, only anterior chamber depth, central lens thickness and ciliary body thickness demonstrated statistically significant differences based on both sex and age. The average corneal thickness of the left and right eyes, as measured in sagittal and dorsal planes, was similar in both male horses under 36 months and those 36 months or older when compared to their respective female counterparts. No significant differences were observed between measurements of the left and right eyes, nor were there significant discrepancies between sagittal and dorsal measurements. These findings provided a baseline for understanding normal ocular ultrasonographic features in Turkmen horses and might aid in diagnosis and management of ocular diseases specific to this breed.

Therapeutic effects of ethanol extract of propolis on experimental cutaneous candidiasis in horse

Abstract Candida albicans is a commensal opportunistic yeast colonizing the skin and mucosal surfaces of humans and animals, which, under specific predisposing conditions, can proliferate excessively and lead to clinical manifestations of candidiasis. The widespread prophylactic and therapeutic use of antifungal agents has led to the emergence of drug-resistant strains, necessitating the exploration of novel therapeutic alternatives. Considering the clinical and conformational significance of equine skin health, the present study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of ethanol extract of propolis in an experimental model of cutaneous candidiasis in horses. In 2022, two clinically healthy, six-year-old female horses (approximately 400 kg) were selected for the study. Immunosuppression was induced using dexamethasone and four intradermal inoculation sites were created on the shaved thoracic and flank regions of both lateral aspects using C. albicans (PTCC: 5027) suspension (5 × 10⁶ CFU mL-1). The experimental sites on the right thorax were treated with ethanol extract of propolis while those on the left thorax received topical nystatin. Lesions on the right flank were treated with glycerin as a vehicle control, and lesions on the left flank were left untreated. Cutaneous candidiasis was successfully induced within five days post-inoculation. Clinical resolution was observed following five days of treatment with ethanol extract of propolis, whereas, nystatin required eight days to achieve complete lesion resolution. The findings of this study suggested that topical ethanol extract of propolis demonstrated superior efficacy in accelerating the resolution of C. albicans-induced cutaneous lesions in horses compared to nystatin.

A rare case report of active Babesia caballi infection in a mare from Gonbad-e-Kavus, Iran

Abstract Babesia caballi is a tick-borne protozoan parasite responsible for causing equine babesiosis, a disease with considerable variation in prevalence across different regions of the world. This report presented a confirmed case of B. caballi infection in a three-year-old mare originating from Gonbad-e Kavus, Iran, highlighting the clinical, laboratory and diagnostic aspects of the disease. The affected mare showed classical clinical signs including persistent fever, generalized weakness, tachycardia and pale mucous membranes, which are indicative of systemic infection and anemia. Laboratory evaluations revealed evidence of hepatic and renal compromise as well as hematological parameters consistent with active inflammatory processes. Microscopic examination of blood smears and molecular techniques such as PCR were employed to confirm the presence of B. caballi, while simultaneously excluding co-infections with other common equine pathogens including Theileria equi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. This case underscored the critical need to combine conventional diagnostic approaches with molecular methods to achieve accurate detection, effective treatment and appropriate management strategies for equine babesiosis in endemic regions.

Extensive subcutaneous emphysema secondary to axillary penetrating wound in a mule: a case report and literature review

Abstract Generalized subcutaneous emphysema (GSE) is an uncommon clinical presentation in equids, typically associated with penetrating trauma and rarely compromising systemic health. This case report documents a 4-year-old working mule presenting with diffuse subcutaneous emphysema secondary to an axillary penetrating wound in the right forelimb. Clinical examination revealed pronounced crepitus without concurrent ataxia, dyspnea, dehydration, or gastrointestinal dysfunction. Diagnostic investigations, including ultrasonography, radiography, complete blood count, paracentesis, and bacterial culture, yielded unremarkable hematological findings and no microbial growth. The wound was managed via local debridement, with adjunct systemic therapy, including penicillin G and flunixin meglumine. Complete resolution occurred within five days under stall rest. This case underscores that generalized subcutaneous emphysema in mules may represent a benign, self-limiting condition when infectious etiologies are excluded. Conservative management, including compulsory rest and anti-inflammatory therapy, can facilitate spontaneous resolution while mitigating risks of pneumothorax or gas gangrene. The rarity of non-infectious generalized subcutaneous emphysema in equids warrants further etiopathological investigation to establish species-specific prognostic criteria.

Concurrent multi-systemic eosinophilic epitheliotropic disease and choledocholithiasis in a 15-year-old mixed-breed mare

Abstract A mixed-breed 15-year-old mare was euthanized for recurrent colic, severe weight loss, pastern ulcerative dermatitis, and coronitis without response to non-surgical medical procedures. The liver was congested with firm consistency at necropsy, and there were multi-focal white spots on Glisson’s capsule. Hemorrhage, ulcer, severe folding, and hypertrophy were seen in the duodenum and jejunum. Histopathological examination showed marked infiltration of eosinophils concomitant with fewer leukocytes, macrophages, and plasma cells, primarily in the liver and intestines. The presence of eight calcium bilirubinate stones, 2.00 - 5.00 cm in diameter, in the common bile duct was characteristic of choledocholithiasis. Concurrent multi-systemic eosinophilic epitheliotropic disease (MEED) and choledocholithiasis were confirmed after ruling out other potential causes of eosinophilic infiltration, including parasitic infection and allergy. The cause of MEED and choledocholithiasis was unclear because of incomplete case history and delayed referral, with a potential infection playing a role and having synergistic effects between the two conditions. When eosinophilic-associated inflammation involves several organs, MEED should be on the differential diagnostic list since infections and allergens are also among the risk factors for this disorder.

Moelerella wisconsensis: first isolation from lungs and spleen of a horse infected with Streptococcus dysgalactia subsp. equisimilis

Abstract Moellerella wisconsensis is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacillus of Entero-bacteriaceae family, and it is an uncommon pathogen in domestic animals. To date, five cases were reported including two dogs, two cattle, and a goat. Streptococcus equisimilis is the second common bacterial agent after the S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus in equine pneumonia cases. The present report describes the isolation of M. wisconses from lungs and spleen of a 10-year-old Arabian horse (May 08, 2022) at post-mortem examination being co-infected with S. equisimilis. Clinical and pathological findings included bilateral nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, sternal recumbency, severe diffuse necrosuppurative rhinitis, multi-focal fibrinopurulent pneumonia and purulent lymphadenitis. Polymerase chain reaction assays showed no viral nucleic acids of equid alphaherpesvirus (EHV) 1, EHV-4, equine arteritis virus and equine papilloma virus. The antibiogram test revealed that the isolate was sensitive to several antibiotics except colistin. Taken together, the present report documents the first isolation of M. wisconsensis from lungs and spleen of a horse; hence, experimental studies are needed to clarify the pathogenity and pathogenesis of M. wisconsensis.

Effect of Small Intestine Strangulation Obstruction on Clinical and Histopathological Parameters An Experimental Study in Donkeys

Abstract To study clinical and histopathological changes occur within the first 12 hours of strangulating obstruction of the small intestine in equine, twenty five adult donkeys were used in an experimental study. Strangulation obstruction of the small intestine was performed for 3, 6, 9 and 12 hours, respectively. Clinical examination was done before surgery and at 3 hours intervals postoperatively. After euthanasia, histopathological examination was made 10 cm, 1, 2 and 3 meters proximal to the strangulated part. Three hours postoperatively, the animals began to show signs of abdominal pain, they were looking around, stamping the hind feet, falling down suddenly. Nine hours postoperatively, animals showed signs of depression with intermittent nervous movements in the form of circle movement. After 12 hours, the animals were lying down; There were a significant reduction in the body temperature, respiratory rate, pulse rate, heart rate with significant increase in capillary refill time. Macroscopic changes of the strangulated part were congestion, edema, and dark red discoloration of the intestinal wall and mesentery. Distension of the intestine proximal to the strangulation extended more with increase the period of strangulation. Microscopic examination showed showed severe congestion, dark brown to blackish discoloration with fibrous shreds on the strangulated segment. Peticheal hemorrhages were observed in the intestinal wall and its mesentery for a distance up to 3 meters. The severity of signs varies according to the duration of obstruction which could give a remarkable justification of the prognosis of the patient and the availability of treatment.
