Staphylococcus aureus are Gram positive bacteria known to acquire antibiotic resistance rapidly and pose a major challenge to clinicians worldwide. Infections by methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are usually associated with increased mortality and prolonging of treatment. Samples (n = 706) from diverse sources (livestock, pets, animal handlers, human hospital) were collected and screened for the presence of MRSA by phenotypic and genotypic methods. The incidence of Staphylococcus aureus was greater in goats (42.00%; 28.20 - 56.80%, confidence interval [CI] 95.00%) followed by cattle (13.50%; 9.20 - 18.80%, CI 95.00%), humans (12.90%; 9.30 - 17.40%, CI 95.00%) and dogs (12.90%; 8.10 - 19.20%, CI 95.00%). Significantly higher incidence of MRSA was observed in dogs (65.00%; 40.80 - 84.60%, CI 95.00%), compared to other hosts namely cattle (48.00%; 26.50 - 64.30%, CI 95.00%), humans (35.00%; 20.20 - 52.50%, CI 95.00%) and goats (10.00%; 1.20 - 30.40%, CI 95.00%). All the S. aureus isolates were further screened for thermostable nuclease (nuc gene) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The incidence of nuc gene in cattle, dog, goat and human were found to be 3.30% (1.30 - 6.60%, CI 95.00%), 5.20% (2.30 - 9.90%, CI 95.00%), 28.00% (16.20 - 42.50%, CI 95.00%) and 9.10% (6.00 - 13.00%, CI 95.00%), respectively. Comparative evaluation of two PCR primers (mecA-162 and mecA-310) indicated the former one as more rational choice for detection of MRSA. Overall, the results of our study indicated possible risk of zoonotic transmission of MRSA from canines.

The role of immunostimulants in reducing diseases and enhancing fish performance has been proven in various studies. In this study, the effects of antioxidant procyanidin and commercial probiotic Bio-Aqua® on some hematological and immune indices of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. A total number of 525 fingerlings in seven treatments (each treatment in triplicates) with experimental diets, including (1) commercial food without supplements (CTL), (2) 400 mg procyanidin kg-1 feed (PC400) , (3) 800 mg procyanidin kg feed-1 (PC800), (4) 0.50% probiotic diet (PB0.5), (5) 1.00% probiotic diet (PB1), (6) probiotic and procianidin 0.50% and 800 mg kg-1 feed, respectively (PB0.5 + PC800) and (7) probiotic and procianidin 1.00% and 400 mg kg-1 feed, respectively, (PB1 + PC400) were fed for eight weeks. The results showed that the use of procyanidin alone did not have any significant effect on blood biochemistry and immune indices. However, the individual use of Bio-Aqua® probiotic could affect the hematological and immune indices of fish, except for monocyte, compared to the control and procyanidin treatments. However, the combined use of the supplements improved the hematological and immune indices of fish. It was concluded that the simultaneous dietary administration of procyanidin and probiotic Bio-Aqua® could improve the general health of rainbow trout.

Arsenic (As) contamination in natural water resources has become a great disaster throughout the world posing serious health problems. The current study was performed to evaluate the protective effects of Escherichia coli strain Nissle 1917 (EcN) against As exposure in goldfish (Carassius auratus). Fish were fed three times a day with 4.00% of body weight of diet with different doses (0.00, 1.00 × 106, 1.00 × 107 and 1.00 × 108 CFU g-1) of EcN for 80 days and then, challenged with 20.00 mg L-1 As for 96 hr under stagnant flow. Physicochemical characteristics of the inlet water were temperature of 25.10 ± 0.70 ˚C, pH of 7.30 ± 0.20 and dissolved oxygen of 7.30 ± 0.30 mg L-1 and 50.00% of water was exchanged once a week. Afterwards, fish were euthanized with a clove oil solution (50.00 μL L-1) and tissues were dissected from each fish and immediately fixed in 10.00% buffered formalin. The histopathological results indicated that the supplemented EcN did not have any side effects on various organs. It was also observed that the damages to kidney, liver, gill and skin were pronounced in fish exposed to As. However, the histopathological damages induced by As in fish tissues were less pronounced in the EcN-treated groups compared to the fish fed with the basal diet. Lamellar blood congestion in gills and epidermal cells detachment from the skin surface as well as hepatocytes, enterocytes and tubular necrosis were reduced in treated groups. These findings indicate that EcN has the potential to ameliorate the As-induced organ toxicity.

Sperm survives for a very short time in fresh semen, and slow cooling to 5.00 ˚C kills a large number of sperms. This study was aimed to compare the semen quality parameters and anti-oxidant levels in four extenders (manual, Triladyl, Steridyl and AndroMed). Semen samples were obtained from a total number of 12 dual-purpose Simmental bulls kept in the Simmental Cattle Breeding Center for a period of 3 months using an artificial vagina. Sperm viability, motility, abnormal morphology, plasma membrane integrity, DNA damage, chromatin quality, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and lipid peroxidation were evaluated. The highest progressive motility, viability, plasma membrane integrity, and TAC and the lowest levels of malondi-aldehyde in the frozen-thawed semen belonged to the semen group frozen with Triladyl. Parameters of motility were higher in the frozen-thawed semen with Triladyl than in other groups, indicating a significant difference from the manual extender. Among the extenders studied, Triladyl was the most suitable for semen freezing in Simmental bulls.

Sepsis is an acute condition caused by the systemic inflammatory response syndrome to an infection. There are very few drugs that could improve the severe conditions in patients with sepsis. Hence, it is important to consider different treatment options. In this survey, we studied the effect of adenosine N1-oxide (ANO) and pioglitazone on rats with cecal ligation and perforation (CLP). They were randomly divided to four groups (n = 10) including Group A: as control group receiving normal saline, Group B: the rats with CLP as surgical control group, Group C: the rats receiving ANO, and Group D: the rats receiving pioglitazone. Interleukin (IL) -6, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), nitric-oxide (NO) in serum blood and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) malondialdehyde, (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in liver and spleen homogenates were measured. The amount of antioxidant enzymes in the spleen and liver, and finally cell viability and rats’ survival were investigated. The measurement of blood serum nitric-oxide and survival of all groups of rats were also performed. The results indicated that both drugs could cause a decrease in IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and NO in rat blood serum and MDA and MPO in the liver and spleen homogenates, however, a significant increase in SOD and CAT in the liver and spleen homogenates in rats that received ANO and pioglitazone was observed compared to rats with CLP group. Cell viability and rats’ survival were significantly improved in rats that received ANO and pioglitazone compared to rats with CLP group. Adenosine N1-oxide showed stronger and more effective effects.

The torsion model of testis in a rat was adopted for evaluation of possible effects of propolis (Prop) on ischemia-reperfusion (IS/REP) injury. The healthy male Wistar rats (totally 24 animals) were randomized into four groups (n = 6) and animals experienced bilateral testicular torsions as follows: In sham group just, laparotomy was performed and in IS group, animals experienced a 3 hr period testicular IS. In IS/REP group, a 3 hr period of IS followed by a 3 hr period of testicular REP for left testis and a one-week testicular REP for right testis were done. In this group animals were gavaged by 1.00 mL normal saline 1 hr before the onset of IS. In IS/REP/ Prop group, the same procedures for IS/REP animals were followed as well as gavage of 1.00 mL Prop extract solution 1 hr before the onset of IS. Analyses of biochemistry, histology, inflammatory biomarkers and sperm parameters were carried out. In IS/REP/Prop group, nitric oxide synthase malondialdehyde, myeloperoxidase and 8-hydroxy-2 deoxyguanine in IS/REP/Prop group were significantly decreased and, superoxide dismutase, total glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione S-transferase were significantly increased compared to the other animals. In IS/REP/Prop group, seminiferous tubules (with normal spermatogenesis) showed all stages of spermatogenic cells with plentiful spermatozoa. Tubular deterioration and atrophy and spermatogenic cell loss in were seen in a limited extent. The mean concentrations of Interleukin-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor alpha in IS/REP/Prop were significantly decreased. Sperm quality was significantly improved by Prop in IS/REP/Prop group. It was concluded that Prop could be supportive in diminishing IS/REP injury in testicular tissue exposed to ischemia.

The creole breed Blanco Orejinegro (Bos taurus adapted) is an important animal genetic resource in Colombia. However, very little is known about the reproductive physiology of the breed. The objective was to determine the dynamics of progesterone circulation and follicular growth in Blanco Orejinegro cows throughout the estrous cycle. Fifteen cyclic Blanco Orejinegro cows were used and subjected to hormonal protocol for estrous and ovulation synchronization. Once the time of ovulation was identified by monitoring the ovarian dynamics with ultrasonography equipment. For description of the results, the mean was used as a measure of central tendency and the standard error of the mean. Statistical analysis was longitudinal descriptive. Blood samples were collected every 24 hr throughout the estrous cycle for serum quantification of progesterone (P4), monitoring of corpus luteum (CL) growth dynamics and follicular dynamics. It was possible to verify that 76.92% of the Blanco Orejinegro cows presented two follicular waves during the estrous cycle and the highest circulating levels of P4 (> 6.00 ng mL-1) were observed on the 14th day of the estrous cycle. It was concluded that the creole cows of the Blanco Orejinegro breed presented two follicular waves per estrous cycle. In addition to, the size of the CL was consistent with the secretion of progesterone presenting higher circulating levels at the end of the luteal phase.

This study aimed to report, for the first time, histopathological lesions caused by an outbreak of acute Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 8 infections in two farms in Cyprus. Lung tissue samples were collected from two different affected farms (a total of eight samples) for bacterial culture, multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based serotyping and histopathological evaluation. Severe respiratory clinical signs, vomiting, anorexia, sudden deaths, a morbidity rate of around 25.00% and a mortality rate of over 60.00% in the fattening stage were reported. Macroscopic lesions included acute to subacute fibrotic, hemorrhagic and necrotizing pneumonia with occasionally encapsulated nodule-like abscesses and fibrous pleuritis. Histopathological evaluation revealed fibrous exudate between alveolar spaces and connective tissue, areas of necrosis mixed with alveolar macrophages, lymphocytes, plasma cells and necrotic leukocytes surrounding colonies of cocci. The bronchial and bronchiolar epithelia were degenerated and replaced by eosinophilic cell debris mixed with inflammatory cells. Several arteries and capillaries were clotted and/or infiltrated by inflammatory cells. In conclusion, these A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 8 cases were accompanied by acute illness, death and more pronounced bronchitis and bronchiolitis.
